Synopsis

Blind Waters (2023) is a survival horror film based on a simple but familiar idea: a couple stranded at sea who must survive a shark threat while dealing with isolation and fear. The story revolves around a romantic getaway that quickly turns into a fight for survival after a boating accident leaves the main characters helpless in the ocean. A deadly shark begins circling them, turning the situation into a constant struggle between panic, endurance, and limited options for escape.

The film tries to add a unique angle by incorporating the female lead’s visual impairment, which could have made the survival aspect more intense and creative. However, this idea is not explored deeply enough, and it doesn’t significantly change how the tension plays out.

Pacing is one of the biggest issues. Large portions of the film feel stretched, with repetitive scenes in the water that reduce the sense of urgency. Instead of tight, edge-of-the-seat horror, the movie often feels slow and predictable.

The shark sequences are serviceable but not very convincing. The visual effects are basic, and the creature never feels truly threatening on screen. As a result, the horror element is weaker than expected for a shark-based thriller.

Performance-wise, the lead actors do their best with the material they are given. The emotional moments between the couple feel somewhat genuine, but the dialogue and writing limit how impactful these scenes can be. The supporting cast and direction remain average throughout.

On the positive side, the film does manage to capture the loneliness and helplessness of being stranded in open water. A few moments of tension work, especially when the characters are directly facing danger, but these are too few to carry the entire movie.
